Fall is a magical time full of change and promise. The beautiful autumn leaves can serve as inspiration for seasonal activities for seniors. At Wickshire Senior Living Oklahoma City, we always look for new ideas to incorporate into our recreational program. So, we welcome new ideas from residents and family members alike. Here are samples of fall activities for seniors you can enjoy in our community
Alfred Hitchcock Matinee
You can probably find Alfred Hitchcock movies at the local library or online. You can simply watch movies and eat popcorn or have other activities that lead into an afternoon matinee. For example, you can hand out paper bags and decorating supplies, so your friends can customize their popcorn bags before enjoying the yummy treat.
A masquerade dinner gives older adults an opportunity to express their creative side. Best of all, you don’t have to wait until Halloween to throw this bash. Purchase undecorated masks, sequence, foam, and paint for your friends to create their character for the evening.
Sunday Tailgate Party
You don’t need a pickup truck or stadium to hold a tailgate party. Simply gather in the common room, choose a team to root for, and invite everyone in the community. To add to the fun, organize one or more games to play before the game begins. For example, you can set up a football toss into an indoor basketball hoop or hula hoop.
Fall Jigsaw Puzzle Competition
Like many of the other activities we’ve suggested, you can adapt a fall jigsaw puzzle competition for your home or a senior living community. Set out different jigsaw puzzles in one room, on different floors of the community, or in your living or dining room. Then, break up into teams made of family members or friends and let the games begin to see who puts the pieces together fastest.
Adult coloring and painting books are still very much in vogue. Whether you use scenes from your favorite adult coloring book or unique arts and crafts ideas, older adults can have fun and spruce up the community with their creative artwork.
Here are two ideas to get you started:
- Fall leaf garland: Collect leaves or collect them with your friends. Then, paste the leaves on craft rings or paper templates.
- Ribboned pumpkins: Ribbons in autumn colors can transform pumpkins into beautiful, easy decor.
Take a Walk to Enjoy the Autumn Scenery
Go outdoors to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful leaves before winter sets in. Adapt this inclusive activity to create a delightful afternoon for various mobility statuses, as follows:
- Open a window at home or visit the outdoor seating area in our senior living community.
- Stroll as far as comfortable down a tree-lined sidewalk.
- Walk in a local park.
- Drive down scenic roads to view the changing autumn leaves.
